Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress, and singer. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher the class at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah aged 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to gentle and kind. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was eight years old. Latifah's 5'10" height made her a powerful performer in high school. She performed the number home from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
